The Gordon-Haus effect for modified NLS solitons

Random jitter in the soliton arrival time (the Gordon-Haus effect) is analyzed for solitons being solutions of the integrable modified nonlinear Schroedinger equation. It is shown that the mean square fluctuation of the soliton position depends on the soliton parameters which can be properly adjusted to suppress the Gordon-Haus jitter.Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Europhys. 3D Geometric Analysis of Tubular Objects based on Surface Normal Accumulation

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a simple and efficient method for the reconstruction and extraction of geometric parameters from 3D tubular objects. Our method constructs an image that accumulates surface normal information, then peaks within this image are located by tracking. Finally, the positions of these are optimized to lie precisely on the tubular shape centerline. This method is very versatile, and is able to process various input data types like full or partial mesh acquired from 3D laser scans, 3D height map or discrete volumetric images. The proposed algorithm is simple to implement, contains few parameters and can be computed in linear time with respect to the number of surface faces. Since the extracted tube centerline is accurate, we are able to decompose the tube into rectilinear parts and torus-like parts. This is done with a new linear time 3D torus detection algorithm, which follows the same principle of a previous work on 2D arc circle recognition. Detailed experiments show the versatility, accuracy and robustness of our new method.Comment: in 18th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing, Sep 2015, Genova, Italy. 201

Spectrum and Variability of Mrk501 as observed by the CAT Imaging Telescope

    Get PDF
The CAT Imaging Telescope has observed the BL Lac object Markarian 501 between March and August 1997. We report here on the variability over this time including several large flares. We present also preliminary spectra for all these data, for the low emission state, and for the largest flare.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Late

Observation of the Crab Nebula Gamma-Ray Emission Above 220 Gev by the Cat Cherenkov Imaging Telescope

    Get PDF
The CAT imaging telescope, recently built on the site of the former solar plant Themis (French Pyrenees), observed gamma-rays from the Crab nebula from October 1996 to March 1997. This steady source, often considered as the standard candle of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, is used as a test-beam to probe the performances of the new telescope, particularly its energy threshold (220 GeV at 20 degrees zenith angle) and the stability of its response. Due to the fine-grain camera, an accurate analysis of the longitudinal profiles of shower images is performed, yielding the source position in two dimensions for each individual shower.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Tex, contribution to 25th ICRC Durba

Detection of Vhe Gamma-Rays from MRK 501 with the Cat Imaging Telescope

    Get PDF
The CAT imaging telescope on the site on the former solar plant Themis has been observing gamma-rays from Mrk501 above 220 GeV in March and April 1997. This source is shown to be highly variable and the light curve is presented. The detected gamma-ray rate for the most intense flare is in excess of 10 per minute.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Tex, contribution to 25th ICRC Durba

The Architectural Character of Chinese Houses in the Chinatown in Semarang, Indonesia

    Get PDF
The Chinatown in Semarang is one of the Chinatowns in Indonesia that shows the existence of economic strength and multiculturalism. The character of this Chinatown is the result of a cross-cultural blend of immigrants in the early days of ethnic kampong in Semarang and has developed from time to time. Cultural diversity and multi-culturalism of the immigrants have resulted in a blend of architectural styles that has colored its architecture combination. This study aims to determine the architectural and cultural potential of the Chinatown area of Semarang. Its intention is to optimize the existing potential so that it can be used as the basis for sustainable urban tourism. The study uses a rationalistic approach within a qualitative paradigm in accordance with the identification of problems and research objectives. The findings show the comparisons between several shop houses in the Chinatown in Semarang (single and double shop houses) and their transformations to Colonial and Modern architecture. The paper concludes that architecture of the early shop houses of the Chinatown has achieved a higher human comfort by using locally available building and construction materials, and responsive to the geographical conditions. Very high energy observations of the BL Lac objects 3C 66A and OJ 287

Using the Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect Experiment (STACEE), we have observed the BL Lac objects 3C 66A and OJ 287. These are members of the class of low-frequency-peaked BL Lac objects (LBLs) and are two of the three LBLs predicted by Costamante and Ghisellini to be potential sources of very high energy (>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission. The third candidate, BL Lacertae, has recently been detected by the MAGIC collaboration. Our observations have not produced detections; we calculate a 99% CL upper limit of flux from 3C 66A of 0.15 Crab flux units and from OJ 287 our limit is 0.52 Crab. These limits assume a Crab-like energy spectrum with an effective energy threshold of 185 GeV.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic

Dampak Ekologis Akibat Peningkatan Urbanisasi di Sepanjang Daerah Aliran Sungai Cikapundung Kota Bandung

    Get PDF
